Friday the 13th

Sometimes known as Black Friday or a day of bad luck, WAGA think of it as a day when golfers around the world can think of the good tournaments to be held this year and then plan their golfing holiday. Read the rest of this entry »

2011 comes to an end

Hi everybody,

The end of 2011 is almost with us! I hope you had a great Christmas and are now looking forward to 2012.

New Year’s eve will be spent having dinner with friends at Surfer’s Paradise and then watching the fireworks at midnight.

After the Xmas break, you can sit down and work out your holiday regime for the year. I do hope that it includes one of the WAGA events for 2012, Buenos Aires in February, Hainan Island in April, Monterey in May and of course, the Gold Coast in September. How the year will fly by!

Thank you for your support and friendship throughout the past year and we look forward to seeing many of you in 2012.

Happy New Year,

Brian and Jennie; WAGA

A Sad Day

Many of the WAGA attendees are repeat players. This year in France we had Tracie and Dean Curry. They were with us in Hnl the previous year and had been to many events.

Tracie had succumbed to ALS this year and died on 21/11/11 at an age younger than myself.

Her photograph appears on many of the WAGA photos and if you knew her, you were very fortunate. She worked for UAL in Sfo and was always a great supporter for WAGA.

For me it is a personal loss. a great friend, a person who you could talk with and share experiences.

If you wish to share messages of condolence, please send them to me and I will pass them on to Dean. I had hoped to go to the funeral but sub-load travel is still as bad as ever…

Thank you for thinking of Tracie Curry

Lake Taupo and other matters

Folks, I have published 27 photos from the event in Lake Taupo on the website. Click on photos and go to the last album. If you have photos you would like published or comments, please send them to me at armlass@optusnet.com.au

On the weekend, WAGA were priviliged to have Jack Penty from Virginia and Alex Asciukiewicz from New Jersey,  Bruce Thornton and Kathy Gay visit for lunch. It was most pleasant we were able to think about events that WAGA have held this year and discuss plans for 2012/2013.

If you were thinking of going to Mission Hills at Hainan Island, Jack was kind enough to produce a copy of the American magazine, Golf Week dated 30th September and on pages 44 through 47, they cover the courses that WAGA will play in April. Part of the editorial says “I’ve seen the future of resort golf in China and it looks like a modern-day American resort on steroids” or “each course was constructed with enough quirkiness to give the layouts character and individuality” and finally, “the sheer volume and excellence of the courses left the most lasting  impression”.

High praise indeed from a noted golf magazine. So, don’t hold back, apply now and book your holiday in China in April, 2012.

Happy golfing, Brian Lassen; WAGA.

Golf results Lake Taupo

Monday the 31st of October was a clear and bright day here in New Zealand. The tournament was conducted at Lk Taupo Golf Course, Centennial. Best  score for men was Richard Palmer with 39 and Greg Chenhall and Lynell Kelly with 38. NTP were taken out by Al Horan on the 6th and Sonja McAlister on the 18th.

Melbourne Cup day did not provide the best weather for golf, overcast and light drizzle at Wairaki. Scratch was won by David Klaffer and nett by Richard Palmer. NTP prizes went to Libby Fowler and Wayne Harris. Hilton provided snacks and drinks for all to watch the Melbourne Cup. My horse, Drunken Sailor ran tenth.

Wednesday dawned very wet and it was thought that play may have to be cancelled. But by 9am, fine weather intervened and all golfers went to Kinloch GC. This a daunting course and the scores reflected the difficulties faced by the players. Some said great, others good and others that they did not want to play a course as hard as this. David Klaffer again won the scratch and NTP prizes went to Wayne Harris and John Field.

Prize giving was conducted at 7.30pm in the Cellar Bar and scratch winner was David Klaffer and nett winner was Greg Chenhall. Both players and non-golfers enjoyed Lk. Taupo and many have stayed on to enjoy New Zealand

WAGA is confused!

When we returned from the WAGA Sun City event in early August, the AUD was $1.10 against the USD. Last week it was $1.04 against the USD. Today, it is $0.97 against the USD. A drop of 14% in 7 days and Australia has just been told that we have the best treasurer in the world and the reason for the decline in the dollar is the national debt of Greece and Italy. Go figure, I cannot!

On a positive note, this week we have had enquiries from Malaysia Airlines Sports Club for a group of 20 to attend our next event in Lake Taupo and then yesterday, a group of 3 want to come from Darwin. With the conclusion of the World Cup of Rugby, the Hilton in Lk. Taupo can accommodate further requests as can the golf courses so if you wish to attend, let us know.

The last event for 2012, the Gold Coast Challenge is now confirmed for September 2 – 5. Courses confirmed are Lakelands for the Monday, Royal Pines for the Tuesday and WAGA is talking with The Glades and Links Hope Island for the Wednesday. Full details, pricing and brochure ready and on the website by the end of the month.

Buenos Aires, Hainan Island and Monterey are still available.

Happy golfing,

Brian Lassen, WAGA.

WAGA events

Hi everybody,

WAGA have now added to the photo album of Sun City, showing images of Lost City, Cabanas and Kapama River Lodge. There are now 115 images and they can be found by going to “Photos”, then last album and select Africa 2011.

The Monterey brochure has been a hit with applications from France, New Zealand and Australia in the first 48hrs. Two folk from SFO who have been WAGA attendees put the following in an email. This might encourage you to join WAGA in CA next May.

“Kudos on the Monterey package. Having played all three courses several times we believe that this is an outstanding venue.

We Northern Californians welcome all the WAGA supporters to our golf heaven.

Looking forward to this event.
Dean and Tracie Curry”

Thanks Dean and Tracie for the kind words and confidence in another outstanding WAGA event.

Some good news from WAGA

When the stock markets around the world seem to have only bad news today, WAGA have some good news.

On another foot, WAGA now have the tournament in Monterey, California on the website. It is scheduled for May 2012. The first applications have already been received.

For those coming to Lake Taupo, New Zealand, a reminder that final payment is due by 30th August. There are still a number of vacancies!
