Christchurch October 2008

Having been back only one week from our European adventures, it has been busy preparing for 2009. WAGA events still include Malaysia, Spain and Australia.

Results of play from weeks 1 and 2 in Lake Como are available on the web-site.

Christchurch in October 08 is now full as we have exceeded our hotel allocation. WAGA are attempting to obtain more rooms at the Holiday Inn but this has yet to be confirmed. WAGA will accept “standy” entries only now but I am sure there will be cancellations closer to the event.

WAGA - 2008/2009

Well Lake Como weeks 1 and 2 are done and dusted! It was a difficult tournament, one of the hardest I have faced both on a personal and business front. This was shown I believe in mistakes made and emotions displayed and I accept this but I also thank those of you who gave me moral and physical support. It was a great boon to me in my very personal moments of distress! So remember, WAGA is for you and your friends so encourage others to join you and enjoy our very special camaraderie.

In saying this, I will point out that for 2008, there is 1 event left, Christchurch in October. WAGA have secured 80 entrants and expect the number will rise to approximately 100. Space is limited!

2009….Kuala Lumpur…April, 24th IAC. Possiblility of fares from MAS. Brochure by mid-July. Maximum 100 people.

2009….Costa del Sol, Spain…June 1 to 4. Beach-side hotel, 3 games of golf in buggy, normal WAGA event. Brochure in mid-July. Maximum 80 people.

2009….Sunshine Coast, Queensland…late July, 4 nights, 3 games of golf, usual WAGA event. Brochure in mid-July. Maximum 80 people.

2009….Honolulu. Possible in October..to be confirmed.

Lake Como final day week 2

Today the golfers travelled to La Pinetina golf course for the last day of the WAGA amateur golf tournament. Weather conditions were good, well at least no rain but underfoot, it was wet. Carts were not allowed.

Scores were better than yesterday at Menaggio golf course but only one player broke handicap. Nearest to the Pins went to Frank Savignano(Aus) and John Thomas(Usa).

Final results:-

Ron Riebli(Usa) 97, Ted Green(Uae) 82, Dennis O’Brien(Aus) 70, Frank Savignano(Aus) 64, Ann Hardie(Aus) 62, Mark Hopgood(Uk) 59, Kader Tazerout(Uae) 58, Ross Worboys(Usa) 48, John Thomas(Usa) 27 and Walter Beeler(Switzerland) 24.

Scores have been checked and double checked to avoid the embarassment of last Friday when Brian Lassen missed the winning ladies score.

Saturday is “Ciao Como” from WAGA and most will miss the lovely city, the people and the restaurants.

Christchurch in New Zealand is the next WAGA amateur golf event in October 08 and there are still a few spots left. It is expected that the group will number more than 100.

Lake Como week 2 day 5

The World Airline Golfing Alliance hosted the third day of competition at Menaggio Golf course in what would be described as less than favourable conditions. Light rain had fallen during the evening and whilst the 9 golfers enjoyed the journey to the course, it was apparent that play would be held in wet weather.

Unlike last week, play was allowed and carts could be used on the course. The lack of run, the weather, the toughness of Menaggio golf course did not allow the competitors to show their top form, with only 3 players getting past 20 points. Ron Riebli(Usa) had 24, Frank Savignano(Aus)23 and Dennis O’Brien(Aus) 20. Nearest to the pin on hole 3 went to Mark Hopgood(Uk) and on hole 10 nobody claimed the pin.

Non-golfers visited Villa Carlotta, Villa del Balbianello and lunched at Bellaggio. Golfers joined the non-golfers for a wonderful 50 minute boat ride on Lake Como for their return to the Hotel Alberto Terminus.

On Friday, golfers will play at La Pinetina golf course and non-golfers will visit the culinary institute and then all will join for the prize presentation dinner that night. Guests will depart Lake Como on Saturday for various destinations.

Lake Como week 2 day 3

Yesterday the group travelled to Milan for the day with some of the group visiting Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper whilst the remainder visited various sites in the city of Milan. The weather was perfect, blue skies and a moderate 26 deg C.

But the best of days must end and last night the rain started. Golf was held today at Villa d’Este with only 8 golfers due to the rain. No players broke handicaps but Ron Riebli(Usa) was the best with 31 followed by Ted Green(Uae) with 28. Ted was also fortunate to win the first Nearest to the Pin with the second being won by the WAGA representative.

On Thursday the group will play at Menaggio, weather permitting and then join the non-golfers for the boat trip back to Lake Como.

Lake Como Week 2 day one.

Sunday was the opening of the first day of week 2 for 10 golfers and 11 non-golfers for the World Airline Golfing Alliance Lake Como amateur golf tournament. Guests from week 1 left on Saturday and the new entrants arrived in this beautiful city.

Following registration, the group enjoyed a welcome dinner and then today, Monday, off to Le Robinne Golf Course or Switzerland for the non-golfers. Golfers found the going hard, a good course but the rough grabbed the ball and the water was always waiting. WAGA were lucky to have the company of Brin Haylock and Lindsay Boyd, two Aussies on holiday in Lake Como so we had 3 groups of four.

Best score was Brin Haylock with 28 whilst in the competition it was Ron Riebli(USA) with 27 followed by Ted Green(UAE) with 25. Nearest the pins were not claimed.

The group go to Milan on Tuesday which is just as well as the weather has again turned foul and rain is falling. Wednesday the golfers play Villa d’Este and non-golfers go shopping.
